America’s 250th: The Semiquincentennial
July 4, 2026 marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Washington, DC is the epicenter of the celebration. Highlights include:
- Salute to America Fireworks (July 4): Billed as the largest fireworks display in history — roughly 850,000 shells launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, eight Potomac River barges, and West Potomac Park — with daytime performances and military flyovers from 1 PM and a live evening broadcast from 7 PM.
- Reading of the Declaration of Independence (July 4): A moving reenactment on the steps of the National Archives, expanded for 2026 with sign-language interpreters and translations into multiple languages.
- National Independence Day Parade (July 4): Planned to be the largest ever, rolling down Constitution Avenue with floats from every state and territory.
- Great American State Fair (June 25 – July 10): Two weeks of all-American food, music, and family fun.
- Spirit of Independence Festival (June 4–6) at the National Archives.
The best part? Most of the marquee 250th events are completely free.
